Study 1

Study 1 explored the literature to understand how the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness can offer basic principles for promoting mental wellbeing in architects’ workplaces and the indoor environments they design for others.

Study 1 of my research asked the overarching question:

  • What potential do the basic psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness have as these basic principles?

First, I conducted an integrative review to answer the sub-question:

  • How can the design of indoor environments support the basic psychological needs?

Second, I conducted a rapid review to answer the sub-question:

  • How can architects' workplaces support the basic psychological needs?
